Below is some news about week one/week two of ACM events. Enjoy!
This is our second year at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Strathroy for leading a Day Camp. There was an increase in campers, and over 30 were in attendance each day. A majority of the children were not from the congregation community, but from the town community. Through the course of the week there were 14 from the congregation who served as volunteers for noon hour supervision, etc. Karen Nelles is the priest of the church. She was the priest at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Chatham before going to Strathroy.
The devotional theme chosen this year was “Parables of Jesus”, and our team members led by Robbie Oleniuk were Veronica Chinnick, Andrew Derynck, Joshua Leigh, Alaura Tiffin and Julianne Zandberg. Joining them from the Alvinston Team were Elisha McKinley and Jamie Charron.
The water games and activities were always popular because July 5-9 was such a hot week. Happily, the auditorium and activity rooms were air conditioned. The campers enjoyed their singing time, for as the week progressed you could hear them singing the songs as they moved from one activity to the next. By Thursday night for the barbecue the campers entertained and delighted their parents and grandparents with all their action songs. This year on Thursday, the campers stayed through until 4:30 pm when the parents began to join them for the 5pm barbecue. A near perfect attendance was on hand, and the church wardens had organized a great set up to accommodate all those in attendance.
The craft activities were well received, for at the end of each day campers were anxious to show their work to their parents, and parents were asking to see their day’s product when they came to pick up their children..
Again this year, the girls of our team stayed at the home of the Breens in Alvinston, and our guys on the team again stayed an the home of the Edwards out in the country. Each day Jim Pepper transported the team about. Again this year Jari Nicholson prepared noon lunches at the church for the team for which everyone was quick to line up.

Pete Anglin really enjoyed his role as the Adullam Adult Representative at the Dresden Daycamp. I’ll send his report as soon as I receive it…promise!
On Saturday, July 17, Jim and I had the privilege of doing some Crossroads driving. It involved picking up Dan Sommer and Josh Leigh at 6:00 am, driving them to Thornhill (or Toronto GTA), and enjoying a lovely day with the Gargano family while Bob drove them the rest of the way to Crossroads Camp (near Gravenhurst). Bob reappeared at 2:30 with Doug Dodman and Stephanie Campbell. They had completed their Crossroads assignment and were heading home….so after a quick ice-cream cone we were back in the car and had them both home by 6:00 pm. It was a great time for getting to know these people better and to appreciate them even more than before. It was Dan’s first time to go to Crossroads and he was excited and nervous at the same time. Josh had been before, so he was a bit more relaxed about the prospect of doing canoe instruction for the week. Dan will be busy with a cabin of up to nine 11 & 12 yr old boys…he’ll do a great job though I know!
Stephanie and Doug had both been cabin leaders and were very keen and enthusiastic about their week at camp. Including staff there were 140 at the camp. They said the meals were AWESOME!.... as were the chapels and just about everything you could think of. It’s a great experience to participate in that camp…an enriching experience which always has a positive impact on the rest of the summer.
This week we have OASIS #3 (already!!!), Frontenac Canoe Camp, and Crossroads. Preparations will be ongoing all week for the Father/Son Algonquin Canoe Camp…the biggest ever!...and the last week of OASIS is next week! …and Choral Camp preparation is a given! Stay tuned!
